Statement from United People’s Front (UPF) on Assassination Attempt for its Secretary General in Juba

The Islamic Fundamentalist regime in Khartoum continues on its helpless efforts to cow and silence the Sudanese oppressed masses and students in particular, on daily basis. On 2 April 2009 the regime security apparatuses and its militias arrested number of UPF cadres in side the campus of the University of Khartoum. Abdel Maula Suliman, UPF cadre at Khartoum University Colleges of Science Department of Geology and others were arrested. The sad fact is that these chasings and arrests are fully coordinated between the Administration of the University and Sudan Security personals. The students opposed to the regimes are targeted everywhere even in public transportations and on streets. The similar brutal attacks on cadres of United People’s front expanded and included other universities across the country, where at Delenge University and Kordofan University dozens of UPF students were severely injured in rallies inside the campuses.
The targeting of UPF students in the universities developed to its dangerous stages where on 5th of April the United People’s Front students escaped assassination attempt in Juba in which the arm of Secretary General of UPF was broken by armed men from South Sudan militias who belongs to National Congress Party. The incident happened in the eve of political rally organized by United Peoples’ Front at the University of Juba in Juba where thousands of Supporters of Chairman of Sudan Liberation Movement/ Army Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nur joined it. We strongly believe that the daily harassments and assassination attempt are designed against UPF because of its full support to the vision of Sudan Liberation Movement/Army.
The United People’s Front despite all these incidents and harassments would like to clarify the following:
1. The dictatorship policies of Islamic Fundamentalist regime which is oriented in killings, displacement and assassinations will not bend down our heads to continue the struggle, but it would rather serve as an incentive to fight for the rights of our people and regime change to build Secular, Liberal Democratic Sudan; which is the only way to keep Sudan united.
2. Those committed crimes and atrocities against people of Darfur and Sudanese people in general must face international justice in ICC.
3. The Government of National Unity and Government of South Sudan will bear full responsibilities towards what is happening for UPF students at the universities during their practice of their legal struggle duties.

The United Peoples’ Front.
